Product Studio vs Freelancers vs In-House Team

Before you write a line of code you have to decide who will write it. Each option can work; they fail in different ways. Here is how they compare for a first product or a major new release.

When a product studio makes sense

You need strategy, design, and engineering working together, you want to ship in weeks rather than quarters, and you would rather manage one relationship than five. A good studio should also leave you with code and documentation your future team can own.

When freelancers make sense

The scope is small and clearly defined, you have a technical lead who can review work and connect the pieces, and speed of coordination matters less than hourly cost.

When to build in-house

The product is your core, long-term advantage, you have found product–market fit, and you can afford the months it takes to hire well. Many teams do both: a studio ships the first version while the in-house team is hired, then hands over.

Questions

Is it cheaper to hire freelancers than an agency?

Hourly rates are often lower, but you pay for the coordination yourself. For a multi-discipline product the total cost and risk are frequently higher.

Can a studio hand over to our in-house team later?

Yes. At Cofiato you own the code and infrastructure, and we document the product so your team can take it forward.
